The Math Music Connection

Throughout history, many great musicians have also been genius mathematicians, and vice versa. The one and only Albert Einstein, for one, was a talented stringed instrument player; and the prolific composer Johann Sebastian Bach was also a brilliant mathematician. As it turns out, when logical thinking collides with creativity, there could be music in the air.

In a sense, music is math. In one way or another, music relies on key math fundamentals. Music revolves around counting, beats per minute, numbered scales and time signatures. Yet, the closest tie between music and math may be the presence of patterns in both. Patterns can help to clarify observed phenomena, as well as inform in making predictions of future events -the benefits of which can be seen in fields like weather forecasting and the financial markets.
